Mindfulness Practices -

Breath Work

“Box Breathing” is a technique I first learned through a bio-feed back session in my early teens. It is a great stress-release.

1. Breathe in slowly for a slow count of 4 (one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand).
2. Hold your breathe for a count of 4 (one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand).
3. Exhale slowly for a count of 4 (one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand).
4. Hold your breathe for a count of 4 (one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand, four-one-thousand).

Repeat as often as you feel called to do so. Use it in the car stopped at a red light, out for a walk, before a big meeting or a full day at the office. This is also a great technique to use when you are settling into meditative state.

“In Out Breathing” is simple awareness during each inhalation and exhalation. On a slow inhale, say quietly (in your mind or out loud), “In”. Breathe in deeply all the way down into your diaphragm (your belly should expand!), and then hold your breathe for a second or two. On the exhale, say quietly (in your mind or out loud), “Out”. Again, once you have exhaled fully, hold your breathe for a second or two. Repeat.

You can also use phrases like:

  • on the inhale, with the intention of breathing in, say - “peace”, “joy”, “love”, “light”, or any combination or other words that inspire you.
  • on the exhale, with the intention of breathing out and releasing anything that is not in your highest and best good, say - “release”, “turmoil”, “darkness” or any other words/energies that you want to let go of.

“Flame Breathing” is also a great stress reducer. Imagine that you are looking at a tall taper candle lit with a vibrant flame. Take a slow, deep breathe in and hold it for a second or two, then exhale with the intention of blowing out the candle - exhale fully. Repeat.

“Be Still” meditation is a great way to presence yourself in the moment and let go of mental chatter. Take a moment to focus on your breathing: breathe in light, love & peace; exhale turmoil, darkness, fear. Do this for several breaths. Then repeat the following mantra (saying each line three times; out loud is best):

Be still and Know that I am God. (breathe) Be still and Know that I am God. (breathe)
Be still and Know that I am God. (breathe)

Be still and Know. (breathe) Be still and Know. (breathe) Be still and Know. (breathe)

Be still. (breathe) Be still. (breathe) Be still. (breathe)

BE. (breathe) BE. (breathe) BE. (breathe)

Sensoral Awareness

Our 5 primary tactile senses are:

  • taste
  • touch
  • smell
  • hear
  • see

We also have a sixth sense, our intuition, and that sense becomes stronger when we have practice grounding and centering ourselves in our physical body and practice in opening our allowing, willingness and deserving. These sensoral awareness are for the 5 tactile senses - if you want more information on how to develop your sixth sense, your intuition, contact Shilo directly at info(at)shilotaylor.com.

Seeing -

  • identify three things that you can see in your environment (outside of yourself)
  • collect some paint samples from your local hardward store and take them into nature; find a conservation, wilderness or other wooded natural area and look for the exact colors of the paint chips in nature! You may be surprised which colors are easier to find then others!
  • finger painting (this is seeing and feeling!) - dip your fingers into generous amounts of children’s liquid paints and create your own masterpiece! Let go of it needing to “look like something”, and let your inner being shine through, having fun and savoring the experience! This is a post-it-on-the-fridge project!!

Support - Pick up the Phone - The telephone helps us share one-to-one and avoid the isolation which is so common today. As a part of the surrender process, this is a tool with which we learn to reach out, ask for help and extend help to others. The telephone also provides an immediate outlet for those hard-to-handle highs and lows we may experience. Remember, the more people we can call upon, the stronger our wellness - make a list! Who can I call when: it’s 3 in the morning, I have a flat tire, I am in crisis, to go to a movie with, to get together for coffee with. Different people support us in different ways at different times: EXERCISE - create a list of people you can call on for support under each of these categories: in crisis, social friend-time, need a helping hand, mechanical support, down-time/relaxation. Update the list occasionally and notice how your needs and support network change over time!

Service - outward focus - Stay tuned - check back soon!! More exciting resources to come!

Journaling - Clear the clutter out of your mind onto paper and create “breathing space” in your mind and your whole being-ness! You don’t have to write a novel - start with one or two lines! Pick a question and journal your response. Putting our thoughts and feelings down on paper, or describing a troubling incident, helps us to better understand our actions and reactions in a way that is often not revealed to us by simply thinking or talking about them - from this awareness, we can let go and let the universe support us.

Try open ended questions. Here are a few provoking questions to get you started:

  • What is one thing I am pretending NOT to know?
  • What are my greatest strengths, skills, abilities and natural gifts? What can I do easily and effortlessly?
  • My body hears everything I think…! Something I would gain if I stopped struggling with my body is…. What will I miss out on if I fail to love my body and fail to treat it as it deserves to be treated?
Do I have an idea about what needs to change in my thinking before I can let go of the struggle? 3 things I like about my body today are…
  • If I was not afraid, what would I dare to do?
  • What is one thing I could do this week/month/quarter - one action I could take - that is so scary it makes my stomach roll over and the palms of my hands sweat, yet I know that doing this one thing could significantly advance me towards my goals? (question thanks to Andrew Barber-Starkey of ProCoach Success Systems)
  • what is one thing I could do today that would cause me to impress myself? (question thanks to Sonja Skage of ProCoach Success Systems)
